You've just had your heavenly facial so how do you keep your skin feeling and looking just as you've stepped out of the spa? Here's how you can enhance your facial results and avoid any discomfort following your treatment:
Sleep on a clean pillowcase
Our pillowcases harbor tons of grime such as oils from our hair, dead skin, bacteria, and makeup (I just might give you the stink-eye if you sleep with your makeup on) so our freshly cleansed and exfoliated skin mustn't be exposed to such yuckiness that may result in breakouts and clogged pores.
Do not exfoliate for 5-7 days
Avoid harsh cleansers, exfoliants, retinol treatments, and AHA creams for 5-7 days. During your facial, we had performed deep cleansing and exfoliation that reveals fresh, new skin. This newly revealed skin needs to be regenerated before exfoliating products are applied, otherwise, there are chances of hypersensitivity. Keep your gentle, soothing products on hand during this time.
Sun protection required
Facials may tend to make your skin more photosensitive, especially if chemical exfoliants are used. Sun protection is a must and I always recommend wearing a wide-brimmed hat immediately after your treatment. Be generous with your sunscreen, not just after your facial, but everyday. Sun exposure is the number one cause of aging!
Do not pick surfacing breakouts
Facials should not cause your skin to breakout, unless there are breakouts under the skin that the Esthetician could not extract. If these do come to the surface, do not pick at them and make an appointment for a quick extraction! Extracting blemishes can be done wrong and may cause infection and/or scarring, so be tender with your precious skin and have a professional do the extracting.
Avoid the gym for 24 hours
Depending on the type of facial received, you may have had steaming during the cleansing or exfoliation. Steaming enhances your skin's circulation which is necessary for cellular nutrient delivery, but strenuous workouts can cause sweating and excess circulation leading to increased sensitivity and possible broken capillaries. Let your skin heal a day before working out. Besides, aren't you a pile of mush after your treatment anyway?
Use clean makeup brushes
I never recommend wearing makeup post-facial because why would you want to slather heavy makeup into your newly cleansed pores? But, if you must wear makeup, prep your brushes prior to your facial so they are clean and ready. Even better, oomph your sun protection and apply a tined moisturizer as your foundation. PS: keep your skin blemish-free by washing your brushes every 1-2 weeks!
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate
Your body needs adequate water intake to flush toxins and prevent dehydration, which results in clearer, brighter skin. Follow the rules (yes, you!) and drink 8 glasses of water a day to keep that healthy glow.
Retain your glow and nourish your skin from the inside by eating whole foods
Your skin is the reflection of your health, ladies and gents! Nurturing yourself by eating whole, unprocessed foods is the way to healthy skin. Feeding your body essential nutrients allows your cells to communicate effectively, resulting in a happy tummy and a radiant complexion.
Always follow your Esthetician's recommendations for the best care for you
Practice the recommended home care provided by your Esthetician. This will ensure you will have the best outcome from your facial treatment. Skin needs and loves a routine, so we will develop the best home treatment that will enhance your facial results and give you the best skin possible!
