Skincare is often looked upon as being confusing and overwhelming, but in fact, it's simple! Keeping it as easy as possible allows you to enjoy the process, rather than thinking of it as a chore. Skincare is an act of self-care so developing a regimen is a step toward a healthy lifestyle!
Let's think of your skincare regimen in steps:
Cleansing is truly an important step in your regimen. Cleansing is designed to gently remove build-up from your skin such as dirt, makeup, oil, toxins, and pollutants. Think of your clean skin as the canvas for the rest of your regimen. Allowing your skin to be free from build-up ensures your targeted treatments can penetrate beautifully, retaining those beneficial actives! When choosing a cleanser, always look for one without sulfates (remember: sulfates are harsh foaming agents which strip your skin of its natural, protective oils) and preferably formulated with ceramides and hyaluronic acid which keep your skin moist, supple, and protected. Many are switching to oil cleansing as their primary cleanser in their regimen. Oil attracts oil so these cleansers work wonderfully by deeply cleansing your pores whilst keeping your skin's natural moisture barrier intact. The nutrient-rich oils also deliver vital antioxidants allowing your skin to defend against damaging free-radicals!
Exfoliating is a crucial step that people often do excessively or neglect entirely. Exfoliating leaves your skin beautifully soft and smooth that people think is necessary, however, too much of this can be extremely damaging. Thus, many people are unsure how to exfoliate, when to exfoliate, and what to use!
The ideal amount to exfoliate at home is 2-3 times a week which allows your skin to retain its protective barrier while keeping your pores clean. Keeping your skin clean from debris allows your at-home treatments to penetrate better, also!
Choosing an exfoliant is a tricky one. Raise your hand if the apricot scrub embraced your face at one point in your life! (Yes, even I loved that scrub). Now, throw that stuff away! The ground apricot pits are so irregularly shaped that they cause micro-tears in the skin, leading to damaged collagen and elastin. Don't sign yourself up for premature aging! Exfoliants that contain uniformly shaped seeds is ideal, such as the CosMedix Purity Detox Scrub. This is a fave of mine that contains poppy seeds, date seeds, and jojoba esters. I also love to use oat or rice flour with a skin-friendly oil such as jojoba oil to exfoliate while the oil enhances your skin's moisture barrier as well. Gentle exfoliating masks with fruit enzymes and acids such as lactic and salicylic acid are also a yummy treat for your skin. The acids and enzymes dissolve impurities, detoxify, and balance while also revealing soft, smooth skin.
Nurturing your skin is an act of self-care and weekly at-home masks are the perfect way to indulge yourself!
Remember that your home exfoliation ensures the effectiveness from your monthly facial treatments, also.
Treating your skin with stimulating and repairing active serums improves the quality of your skin. Serums are concentrated treatments packed with growth factors, powerful antioxidants, peptides, retinol and other incredible actives. Treatment serums prevent and reverse aging, treat acne, promote healing, regenerate renewal for more youthful skin, nourish for a healthy glow, infuse your skin with potent antioxidants, brighten pigmentation, and the list goes on! Well, how do you incorporate a serum into your regimen? Simply, treatment serums can be used morning and night. These typically contain ingredients that assist in your skin's natural recovery process and infuse vital nutrients deep within your skin. Treating your skin with serums containing retinols and acids are stimulating and need to be only used nightly, however. It's important to build your skin's tolerance to these actives being that they increase your cellular turnover and have the potential to cause irritation. Your skin regenerates itself at night so applying your treatments allows your skin to absorb these actives easily, waking up with glowing skin!
Keep your skin soothed, restored, and protected with moisturizing. Moisturizers provide the skin with superior hydration by replenishing the skin's natural moisture barrier, leaving you protected. No matter your skin type, everyone needs to moisturize, even oily skin! Those prone to oily skin tend to be dehydrated and your skin over-produces sebum to compensate for the lack of moisture. If oiliness is your concern, look for lightweight fluid moisturizers or even hydrating serums to provide your skin the moisture it needs without being thick and heavy.
Sun protection is the best anti-ager and with investing your time and money into building your regimen, it's important to retain your results and mostly, prevent cancer. Choose a broad spectrum sunscreen that guards against UVA and UVB rays with at least an SPF of 30 and apply everyday, even if you're indoors. The sun's harmful rays are mutagens and affect the DNA of your skin's layers and overtime, can develop into cancer.
Now that we've discussed the steps, let's go over your regimen!
