Acne is a condition that affects 90% of teenagers, with the peak years between ages 17-20. Adults also suffer from acne in their 30's and 40's, and older! We all struggle with acne but yet, we aren't quite sure what exactly it is and why it happens. Let's discuss all about acne and how we can treat it!
What is acne?
Acne arises when excess sebum, dirt, and dead skin cells become trapped deep inside the follicle. Once the pore is blocked, the oxygen-less environment allows bacteria, P. acnes, to form, becoming an inflamed and swollen pimple. Whiteheads, or closed comedones, are trapped material that can develop into acne if not treated properly. Blackheads, or open comedones, form when the pore remains open and becomes darkened due to oxidation. Blackheads form more commonly in oily skin types due to the over-active sebaceous glands. Cystic acne is the most difficult type of acne to treat. These lesions are triggered by hormones which cause the skin's oil glands to become hypersensitive. These oil glands overproduce sebum, so much so that the glands become engorged and burst under the skin, creating hardened nodules. Cystic acne presents an increased risk of scarring due to their potential to destroy collagen so it's important to seek guidance from a professional.
Now that we know the different types of acne, what can we do to prevent and treat it?
Although acne is an inflammatory condition, it can be easily treated and prevented with the proper skincare routine and nutrition. Acne presents an emotional trigger if not properly taken care of but this battle can be won! Set your skin free today!
