I often get asked which over-the-counter and department store skin care brands I prefer. I honestly have the most difficult time making suggestions. I almost feel as I am cheating my client out of fantastic skin care when just thinking of recommendations. I understand cost is a huge component, or probably THE component in your questioning. I have to tell you, if you want a healthy skin transformation, professional skin care is the only way to go.
Professional skin care products contain higher concentrations of active ingredients than over-the-counter products. If you compare labels between a professional brand and an OTC brand, you may see they contain the same actives. But remember, the OTC brand contains a VERY small amount, while the professional line contains the ingredient on a clinically active level. These actives are delivered into the skin at a deeper level, rather than OTC brands, which are only formulated to penetrate just the top layer of skin. Professional ingredients also consist of smaller molecules, which penetrate into the dermis where your collagen and elastin are contained and into the basal layer where new cells are formed. This allows for a true change within the skin!
Along with the pure, high quality actives, professional products never contain fragrance, colors, or dyes. These additives may make the OTC product smell and look more appealing, but these can cause sensitivity and irritation to the skin.
If cost is your concern, remember this: professional product prices are very similar or almost the same compared to OTC brands. How so? Well these products are not concentrated, so you will end up using more which equals purchasing more at a quicker rate! Also, you will only see minimal results with OTC brands since they work at the top layer of your skin only, which will in turn push you to purchase more in the hopes of seeing real change. Professional products are proven to work and provide real results! Your skin can be transformed by these products as they repair skin at the deepest level where problems arise such as lines, wrinkles, sun damage, and acne.
Choosing a skin care line needs to be based on their credentials and the positive results by true consumers. I urge you to stray away from over-the-counter brands which can be damaging, ineffective, and costly! If you truly want to transform your skin and health, build your trust with a reputable skin care professional that can provide you with results-driven skin care products! And I hope to be that trusted professional you choose!
It's extremely important that what you put on your skin isn't filled with harsh, stripping ingredients. Many added ingredients such as sulfates are very damaging to your protective skin barrier and even your overall health!
Sulfates, which are labeled as SLS(Sodium Lauryl Sulfate), SLES(Sodium Laureth Sulfate), ALES(Ammonium Laureth Sulfate), and ALS(Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate), are foaming and lathering agents in your products. It feels good when your skin is squeaky clean, right?! Well that squeaky clean isn't doing your skin any favors..sorry babes! Sulfates are surfactants which break down oil, makeup, and debris from your skin but they also remove those lovely protective oils too! Without those protective oils, your skin is prone to inflammation. Dehydration, rosacea, premature aging, acne, dryness, and oiliness are all results of inflammation. Be sure to choose a cleanser that is labeled without sulfates. You will notice these cleansers will not be as foaming, or foaming at all, so it will take some time getting used to.
Want to protect those lovely oils I mentioned earlier? Dive into oil cleansing! Oil cleansing is simply using an oil to cleanse your skin! Now, I know it sounds crazy to put oil on your skin, especially if you suffer from oily skin. But, rest assured, oil cleansing is magic! Oil binds to impurities on your skin such as makeup, sunscreen, dirt, and sebum and dissolves them away. A lot of cleansers are oil-free which disrupt your pH balance, causing your skin to be unbalanced and produce more oil; this equals oily, problematic skin! Oil cleansers protect your skin’s natural pH which prevents an overproduction of oil and will allow your skin to repair itself.
Now, which oil do I choose? Like with all skin care products, it’s trial and error. I recommend trying tamanu oil, olive oil, jojoba oil, avocado oil, or argan oil. You can certainly blend oils together to make your perfect, customized cleanser. Even add in some essential oils to make it smell yummy (plus the addition of the amazing benefits of essential oils too)!
Finally, how do I oil cleanse? It’s super easy! I prefer to apply the oil to dry skin and massage away. I focus the oil on my chin and around my nose where I get more congestion. Don’t rub too hard for too long so you don’t cause potential irritation. Massage for about 45 seconds to 1 minute to be sure every bit of debris is dissolved. Removal is just as easy! Some oil cleansers like CosMedix Purity Solution washes right off with water. Other oils need to be removed with a gentle, warm cloth. After removing, just apply your restoring serums, topicals, and moisturizer!
One more thing! It you are using a topical retinol or AHA product, I would consider using a second cleanser to be sure the oil is completely off. This is because AHA products cannot penetrate oil, and topical retinols need to be applied to clean skin—you want these babies to be completely effective!
With either sulfate-free cleansing or oil cleansing, you will notice a change in your skin's hydration, texture, tone, and the inflammation will disappear! Yay to healed, healthy skin!
When I first meet you, I always discuss what your main concerns are, your home skincare regimen, and your diet and lifestyle. Many troublesome skin conditions are the result of damaging skin care products and internal factors which is why it's important to discuss these topics. I want to consider every factor which could be preventing you to be healthy, and advise you on the best ways to heal yourself inside and out.
Harmful skin care products have the potential to weaken and destroy your skin's protective barrier, which can lead to inflammation along with premature aging--yikes! It's important to consider incorporating products with pure ingredients into your regimen to heal and correct your skin.
Another thing to consider when restoring your skin is your diet and lifestyle. Your skin is the reflection of your internal health. What does THAT mean?! Let's backtrack to the "inflammation" thing. Inflammation is part of your body's immune response, but inflammatory foods such as dairy, grains, gluten, white flour, wheat, sugar, alcohol, and trans fats can disrupt the body and skin's healing process. This disruption results in all acne grades, rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, dryness..the list goes on. Crazy, huh? (This topic is one of my faves, so I will have more on it in the near future).
So contact me and let's discuss how we can heal yourself and get you on a protective skincare regimen today!
